Levin (Hank) Alexander Purnell was born July 27, 1970 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania born to Katrina Ann Purnell, father James Lewis, Baltimore, MD. "Hank" was educated in the Wicomico County Public School system, graduating from Wicomico High School in 1988. Hank graduated from University of Maryland, receiving degrees, Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy, Bachelor of Science, Psychology from Salisbury State University and a Master's Degree, in Physical Science. Hank worked for Verizon, as a Central Office Technician for 19 years. 

He attended Mills Memorial Baptist Temple, Salisbury, MD Hank was also a member of the fraternity, Omega Psi Phi, Pi Epsilon chapter where he was initiated in the Fall of 1996, living the life.

Cherishing Levin's memory are his mother, Katrina Purnell, brother Christopher James Purnell, sister, Pamela Sims, Norfolk, VA, uncle, James Purnell (Yolanda), aunts Trauffine Purnell, Wanda Downes, Salisbury, MD, Janet Freeman and Velma Fisher, Philadelphia, PA, Queenie Myers (Robert), Austin, Texas, Alice Stewart (James), Bryantown, MD, step-mother Deborah Carrington, Pomfret, MD, niece Chandrea Purnell, Salisbury, MD, nephews Joshua Purnell, Owing Mills, MD and Marcus Purnell, Salisbury, MD and a host of relatives, associates and friends.

Hank was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, James and Flora Purnell, great-grandmother, Mazie Ray Shockley, uncles Ernest and Edward Holden, sister Tiffany Carrington, and step-father Charles Carrington, Sr.

Levin's personable and fun-loving spirit will be sorely missed.

Each year the alumni of Pi Epsilon chapter rally together to give back to their alma mater via the Russell Stansbury/Robert Dowery Scholarship Fund. This $10,000 endowment is the the first of its kind to be established by a Greek letter organization on the UMES campus. 

​

This year during the school's homecoming halftime, Pi Epsilon's Scholarship Chair, Bro. Charles Flowers (#4 Fall 1980), presented UMES President Dr. Joanne Bell with a check for $8,147.00. This annual donation is the 5th year in a row that Pi Epsilon chapter of Omega Psi Phi has given the largest amount of any Greek Letter Organization on the campus.

UMES Hall of Famers and chapter Bros. Larry Penn (#1 Spring 1972), Eric "Moby" Brown (#1 Fall 1977), and Derrick Leon Davis (#6 Fall 187)  were recognized in February by the school's National Alumni Association as they inducted him into the UMES Hall of Excellence (HOE). The HOE ceremony was held on campus as part of the school's annual Homecoming celebration and is a bi-annual event that takes place on the years opposite the school's athletic Hall of Fame ceremony.

Congratulations to the brothers for reaching such a great milestone.

The brothers of Pi Epsilon mourn the passing of Brother Gregory Joseph Anderson . "Joey" as he was affectionately called passed away peacefully with his family by his side in Douglasville, GA on June 2016. Born in Cape May Court House, New Jersey on January 19, 1957, Joseph worked as an educator for over 30 years in Pennsylvania, Washington, DC and Georgia. Joey graduated from Lower Cape May Regional High School in 1975 and form the University of Maryland Eastern Shore in 1980 where he was inducted in to the Pi Epsilon chapter of Omega Psi Phi in the Spring of 1978. 

Joseph served a a Cape May Beach Lifeguard for over five years and he utilized these skills as a physical education educator to teach Special Needs children how to swim. Predeceased by his father, Clifton "Doc" Anderson and his mother, Ruthe Grice Anderson, Joey leaves six siblings, his loving companion, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, friend and extended family to cherish his memories.

Congratulations to Bro. Eric "Moby" Brown on receiving Omega Psi Phi's 2nd District Superior Service Award at the 2nd District Conference in Bethesda, MD. Brother Brown who pledged our beloved Pi Epsilon chapter in the Fall of 1977 is currently a member of Pi Omega graduate chapter in Baltimore, MD. Brother Brown is a tireless worker for Omega and it is well deserved.

The cover of the Winter 2012/Spring 2013 Collector's Edition of Omega Psi Phi fraternity's international publication The Oracle features the artwork of one of Pi Epsilon's very own -- Bro. Craig Ballard (#3 Fall 1989). After being the 1st runner-up in the Centennial cover design contest, the Editor of The Oracle, Bro. Micheal Boykin was so impressed with his artwork, he asked him to serve on the Fraternity's first graphics committee. Bro. Ballard was then tasked to design the cover of the publications collector's edition which featured the Grand Council standing with President Barack Obama.
